Judith Pihl is one of six identical William Fife Six metre racing yachts. They were built as a one design class in Australia between 1930 and 1937. This is the third Fife six metre that Sydney Wooden Boats have worked on. Sjo-Ro had a complete restoration in 2014. We are trying to rediscover and save as many of the six original class yachts and get them all sailing together as a one design class again.
Judith Pihl has had a very long and illustrious racing career. She has raced in Melbourne and Sydney. Like most of her sisters, she ended up being converted into a cruising yacht with a cabin which helped preserve her. Later in her life she was renamed JUNO, but she is returning to her original name. Her namesake was Judith Pihl the grand daughter of her original owner Alf Watts.
Sadly she ended up in a paddock in Yass in 2010. This bought about a rapid deterioration in her condition with excessive shrinkage of all of her framework.
Judith Pihl was planked in Huon Pine and all of the centreline of the yacht was made from New Zealand Kauri. After six years the yacht was craned out of her resting place in Yass and taken back to Sydney for a keel up rebuild for her current owner who plans to sail her on Pittwater and wants to see the return of this classic William Fife one design class.
As much of the original centreline and planking as possible is being reused in her restoration. The hull was carefully taken apart and is now being reassembled from the lead keel up. All the transverse framing is being replaced, but the lead, centreline, and as much of the original Huon pine planks will be refurbished, repaired and reused. Judith Pihl is being rebuilt accurately to the original plans No 790 as an open cockpit racing six metre
